Sunflower Hearts for garden birds are ‘the’ go to seed for most. A fast food but with more healthy benefits. When insects are in short supply, they provide a high energy, high protein alternative. Support feeding birds this oil rich food helps to keep their feathers and skin in tip top condition. Buying hearts means less mess under and around your bird table. When autumn arrives, stepping up feeding gives them the energy they need to make it through a frosty night. Short winter days and long winter nights mean that small birds have to eat efficiently to gain the most benefit.

Peanuts are a highly nutritious source of protein attracting a wide variety of visitors. Regulars to the Hedge Buddies garden are woodpeckers, great tits, blue tits, coal tits, gold crests, green finches, sparrows, siskins and a family of squirrels to name a few. These peanuts have been selected from a top quality provider as it is important to use the best you can. You should store them in a cool dry place to prevent mould growth because this will make the birds unwell.

Raisins in a mix is a good way to attract the songbirds to your feeders. They would normally eat a lot of berries but when they are no longer available, putting them in a mix still gives them what they like along with the other food.

Mealworms are a firm favourite with all garden birds.  When live insects are in short supply, they provide a high energy, high protein alternative. Support feeding. Offering mealworms is a treat, so don’t over do it. When autumn arrives, stepping up feeding gives them the energy they need to make it through a frosty night. Short winter days and long winter nights mean that small birds have to eat efficiently to gain the most benefit.

Mixed Suet Pellets contain peanuts along with insects, mealworms and berries and are a great energy snack for all bird types.  In winter they are an essential source of fats to help the birds get the energy they need to make it through a cold night. A small bird will eat up to 30% of its body weight during daylight hours in winter so your feeders will be busy. You can feed these from a tube feeder, on the bird table or in your ground feeding dishes.

Pinhead Oatmeal is inner part of the oat that has been finely chopped to make it easier for visiting birds to eat. They are attractive to bird such as Wrens, Dunnocks, Robins, Blackbirds, Song Thrushes and Chaffinches.

Birds become reliant on supplemental feeding, so once you start it’s now advised to feed throughout the year. Adult birds break up food before giving it to their young, so it is safe to feed during the breeding season.. You will see an example of them breaking up food in the video on the About us page.

Top quality fat balls. Currently only insect ones but other options to come at a later date. ✋

NB: The packaging – A lot of research went into finding the most environmentally friendly option while still having the strength to hold the weight of product. You can put the bags into your home composting, garden waste bin or into your regular bin. It will take longer to compost at home, but will take approx 12 weeks in a landfill site. It is certified to the European (EN13432) for Industrially compostable packaging.
