World Soil Day

World Soil Day is observed on 5th December each year. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, a champion of soil resources conservation.

World Soil Day is an annual event that serves as a platform to promote the significance of soil in supporting life on Earth. It aims to educate individuals and communities about the essential roles that soil plays in agriculture, food security, biodiversity, climate regulation, and more.

World Soil Day was officially designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 to raise awareness about the significance of soil as a vital resource. It has since become an annual event to promote soil conservation and sustainable land management.

The day aims to emphasize the essential role of soil in providing food, supporting ecosystems, and mitigating climate change, as well as the need for responsible soil stewardship.

Why is soil important?

  • Food production: Soil is the foundation of agriculture and provides essential nutrients for plant growth, ultimately ensuring food security.

  • Ecosystems: Soil supports a wide range of ecosystems, from forests to grasslands, and is home to countless organisms.

  • Climate change: Healthy soil plays a crucial role in carbon sequestration, helping to mitigate climate change.

  • Water filtration: Soil acts as a natural filter, purifying water and preventing pollution.
