If you want to recycle your food waste, improve your soil, and boost your allotment’s productivity, a worm farm and a Bokashi kit are both fantastic tools. But which one is right for you—or do you need both?

Quick Decision Guide

1. What Do You Want to Compost?

· Worm Farm → Best for fruit & veg scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, and small amounts of shredded paper/cardboard.

· Bokashi Kit → Handles ALL food waste, including cooked food, meat, dairy, citrus, and small bones.

➡ If you generate a lot of cooked food waste, a Bokashi kit is a must. ➡ If your waste is mostly raw veg and fruit, a worm farm may be all you need.

3. How Quickly Do You Want Compost?

· Worm Farm → Takes a few months to produce compost, but provides ultra-rich worm castings.

· Bokashi Kit → Ferments waste in 2 weeks—just bury it in your allotment soil or add it to a compost bin.

➡ For speed, Bokashi wins. ➡ For long-term, high-quality finished compost, worms are the way to go.

4. What’s Best for an Allotment?

· Bokashi is fantastic for allotments → Dig the fermented waste straight into your soil for a nutrient boost, or add to your compost heap for a real boost.

· A worm farm gives you premium worm castings & liquid fertiliser → Perfect for feeding veg and flowers organically.

For the best results? Use both! The Ultimate Combo!

· Start with a Bokashi kit to break down all food waste.

· Then feed some of the pre-composted Bokashi waste to worms and bury the rest in your allotment soil or compost.

2. How Much Space Do You Have?

Both options are compact and can fit in a kitchen!

· Worm Farm → Can be kept indoors (kitchen, utility, porch) or outdoors in a sheltered spot.

· Bokashi Kit → Designed for indoor or outdoor use—perfect for a kitchen or porch.

➡ Both work faster in a sheltered warm (ish) spot – if space is tight, either system works. Choose based on what you want to compost.
